In the past century, humankind has made incredible technological advancements. With the help of technology, we now have access to amazing resources and technologies that make life incredibly convenient. It has become difficult for many to keep up with the rate of inventions because new discoveries in the technical field occur so frequently.
Even while the tales behind these technological marvels are fascinating, they are even more so today.
1.Numerous bots are used to maintain Wikipedia.
Today's internet users are generally familiar with what Wikipedia is. Online, there is a significant collection of data gathered from the public. The fact that volunteers write and edit the online encyclopaedia is well known.
But did you realise that the Wikipedia pages are currently maintained by thousands of bots (automated programmes)? Currently, 2468 bot tasks have been given the go-ahead to perform upkeep chores on more than 52 million English Wikipedia articles.
Wikipedia bots carry out tasks like adding new pages, fixing typos, improving style, etc. When alterations are made as a result of vandalism, bots can also restore the pages to their original state.
2.The first original computer mouse was referred to as a "X-Y Position Indicator for Display Systems."
Stanford Research Institute (SRI) created the first computer mouse in the 1960s. The tool was referred to as a "X-Y position indication for displays."
The mouse was created by Douglas Engelbart and Bill English, according to legend. It's a misconception that Xerox APAC created the mouse. In 1968, Engelbart used the Xerox Alto computer to demonstrate the mouse for the first time. He referred to it as the "Mother of all demos."
The instrument was given the nickname "Mouse" because of the cable that stuck out of it, which Engelbart said looked like the tail of a rodent.
3.In 1999, Google was up for sale.
In 1999, Larry Page wished to sell Google to Excite. The price for the acquisition was fixed at $750,000 and 1% of Excite. But afterwards, the agreement was broken. Google's market value today exceeds $700 billion.
There are two different accounts of why Excite decided against purchasing Google at the time.
George Bell, the CEO of Excite at the time, reportedly rejected the transaction because Larry Page required that Excite switch to Google's search technology for all of its products.
However, despite Google's search algorithm doing exceptionally well, according to information provided by Steven Levy in his book "In The Plex," George Bell was not too pleased. Bell believed that Google's relevant search results could drive consumers to competing websites, making it tougher to keep them as customers.
4.The website's original name wasn't Amazon.com.
5.The QWERTY keyboard was created to reduce typing speed.
The first typewriters produced in the 1870s had few technological problems. When multiple keys were depressed quickly or simultaneously by a typewriter, the metal arms that hold the characters would clash and jam.
Christopher Latham Sholes made numerous design changes to the keyboard layout to get around the issue and improve the typing experience. Finally, the QWERTY keyboard's current layout was created.
